Artist Snapshot: TerraMerhyem

Accepte la notion de l’infini : après cela, tout le reste ira de soi…
Accepts the notion of infinity: after that, everything will go without saying…

No stranger to the arts scene, TerraMerhyem presents a popular figure.   On first meeting her, one is immediately struck by her warm-hearted and loving nature.    Terra’s avatar is striking, hard to miss in a crowd: tall, willowy and adorned in wondrous costumes reflective of her love of mythology, and oh, of course, her self-confessed narcissism.  She also has a tremendous sense of humour as you’ll see from her responses to my questions.

Terra tells us to expect ‘“Son et Lumière” (a sound and light show) with a figurative, mythological, spectacular and intense style of art.  It would seem Terra breathes art:

“L’art est pour moi un des 4 éléments qui font que la vie vaut la peine d’être vécue.”

“Art is for me one of the 4 elements that make life worth living.”

While extremely grateful for the opportunity, she already jokes about the imposition of a restricted land impact.  “What only 10000 prims and four months?!” ‘Fraid so, Terra, and as much as we’d love to show your art under the gorgeous smiling faces of the “Bayon” at Angkor Wat, can’t help you there! An aspect of these interviews I love is learning about the diversity of cultural influences on our Launch 1 grant artists.  Terra when asked which great master she would like to have her work displayed next to chose:  “Sous les magnifiques et souriants visages d’hommes du « Bayon » à Angkor Wat“.

Having been to Terra’s concerts which blend sculpture, dance and music, one can indeed be transported to such a wondrous place and imagine her shows in the spotlight there.   If you’re an initiate to Terra’s work, though, be sure to bring, she says, open ears, open mind and curiosity.   What no rioja?!?  I’ll bring a mirror instead, Terra!

Terra will be resident at Region 2 from March 2020. Thank you to Terra for bringing a smile to my face and to Traci who provided the portraits!

Safar used to be a slave to her own ideas about what it meant to be a proper person. When she woke up she decided to learn how to ride a motorbike, and took to the road armed only with pen and paper. She now calls herself a writer, though currently as a ghost.
