Artist Snapshot: Suzen Juel

Suzen Juel, also known as Juel Resistance, is a feisty character who sings and plays guitar around the Second Life grid. Popular, she plays in a variety of venues from beach parties to BDSM communities. This is a source of amusement to herself as her followers often have to ask about the dress theme, and in wanting to catch her while playing live, I turn up decidedly under- or over-dressed, depending on location. Due to technical issues it takes three attempts and I look very much a gold-fish out of its bowl on each occasion.

After listening to a few nervous butterflies perform, Suzen’s stage presence is refreshingly unperturbed and professional. So confident, in fact, she will compose a song on the spot from a single word the audience shouts out to her, a potentially hilarious prospect. Her voice reflects her nature, Suzen is no shrinking violet in the spotlight, so I blink in surprise when she tells me she is nervous about being awarded an SLEA grant, although also honored and excited. I am less confounded when she says to bring ‘a very very open mind, be able to look outside of the box, outside the lines, outside the expected‘ when approaching her art. Her style of art is “Dark. Quirky. Moody. …… It may be simple, it may not be, that’s your call, all I do is present the dish, you taste it with your eyes.” Suzen isn’t just a musician; she also expresses her artistic talent visually.

“Making art is to time travel.” (Francesco Clementa)

For Suzen, art is ‘an invisible extension of self, that can only be exposed through the muse that lives within.’ When I ask her ‘if you could display your art next to one of the great masters, who would you choose?’ her response is ‘Picasso…. that is if I had the nerve! I’ve always loved looking at his art.‘ I suspect Suzen shares that mischievous sense of humour I’ve seen in some of Picasso’s sketches.

Suzen has promised to perform during her residency. I recommend keeping an eye on the calendar and saving the date.

Thank you to Suzen Juel for waiting patiently for her snapshot, and for providing the featured image and the words to enable this post. Suzen Juel (Juel Resistance) will be resident at Region 1 from March 1st until the end of June.

Safar used to be a slave to her own ideas about what it meant to be a proper person. When she woke up she decided to learn how to ride a motorbike, and took to the road armed only with pen and paper. She now calls herself a writer, though currently as a ghost.

  1. Suzan Juel is a favourite performer of Doc and I, Her genuine talent and wonderful personality charm everyone into thinking “she’s singing this to me… I wonder if these other people know” …and everyone feels the same thing 💗🎶
Then if we’re lucky enough to see her art, we see her passionate joy and wonder leap to a new level and we look up in our own experience of wonder and feel “I feel she made that just for me!”
We feel everything she shares as though we have been invited into her life for a friendly fun experience we soon realize will be part of each of us forever and we want more and leave feeling the luckiest people ever to have been part of anything she shared. 💕🎵
